Seats to elect

  • One (1) Minister of Religion—Ordained
  • One (1) Minister of Religion—Commissioned
  • Two (2) Laypersons

Duties

Three-year term (limit three consecutive terms). Meetings four times a year at the institution. The board governs the university — its president and faculty — consistent with the institution's mission and the Synod's Constitution, Bylaws, and resolutions: appointing and supervising the president and faculty, setting policy, approving campus plans, programs, and budgets, all with consistent attention to the Synodical confession and the institution's mission of inculcating the faith.

Desired qualifications

A board of regents is responsible for the spiritual, academic, and financial health of the institution. Members must assure themselves that the work is carried out effectively and managed in a business-like manner within an annually established budget, and are also responsible for the general welfare of faculty, staff, and students.

Members should be acquainted with current trends in education and have a strong commitment to Christian education, with special interest in preparing church workers. Knowledge of the institution and its region, demonstrated familiarity and support for the Synod's doctrinal positions, and two or more of these qualifications/backgrounds are required: theological acumen, an advanced academic degree, higher-education administration, administration of complex organizations, finance, law, investments, technology, human resources, facilities management, fund development, or a specific instructional or operational domain designated by the institution ( [a, c]).

Nominees review and confirm a summary of the demands and expectations of regent service prepared by CUS, and undergo training within one year after the convention or the seat will be declared vacant ( [d, f]).

Additional regulations

  • No more than two elective members of a college, university, or seminary board of regents may be members of the same congregation ( [7]).
